Born in 1918 in Pietermaritzburg, Errol was a painter of landscapes, still life, seascapes, figures and wildlife. He worked in oil.

He was mainly self-taught but during the early 1940’s he studied at the Natal Technical College. He spent a while working and sketching in the Zululand Lowveld.

He was a professional guitar player in night clubs from 1940 to 1947. During World War 2 he was at the Natal Field Artillery.  In 1948 he lived in Knysna.  He was guided in those early days by the artist WG Wiles.  In 1954 he moved to Johannesburg and held numerous one man exhibitions by invitation as well as being prominently featured in many group exhibitions.

In the late sixties he went to live in Ramsgate on the Natal South Coast and in 1978 opened the Errol Boyley Gallery.  In 1985 he left the South Coast for a brief spell in Underberg Natal, he moved to Pietermaritzburg in 1986.  He lived and worked throughout SA and visited Madagascar in 1973.
