Otto du Plessis was born in Pretoria on 29 November 1971.
He matriculated from the Pro Arte School of Art, Music and Ballet, graduating top of his class for Sculpture. After school, he joined the National Service as a Navy Diver. He moved on to study for a Higher Diploma in Marketing at Pretoria Technikon, working as apprentice to sculptor Anton Smit during this period.
In 1994 he moved to Cape Town to work for sculptor Jean Doyle at the Doyle Art Foundry, before setting up the Bronze Age Art Foundry for Clive Calder in Simonstown. He left the Bronze Age Art Foundry for a two year period to live in London where he spent his time sculpting plaster enrichments for the Thomas and Wilson Company. After his return to South Africa, he proceeded to take ownership of the Bronze Age Art Foundry, steering it into becoming one of the leading art foundries of South Africa.
Otto is passionate about figurative sculpting and has completed many sculpture commissions through the years. These include many private commissions as well as, amongst others, Liberty; the national independence monument of the Seychelles, the B.O.E Sculpture at the V&A Waterfront, monumental work in Dubai and a set of life-size school children in Hout Bay.
